To spark online chatter for its newest creation, Taco Bell is taking to Twitter with a hashtag campaign. The Doritos Locos Tacos will arrive nationally on March 8th, but the winner of the Hometown Tweet-off will receive a visit from the Taco Bell truck, treating the local community to a first-look at the new menu item. By using the #DoritosLocosTacos and #Contest hashtags together, the person with the most retweets by Feb 20th wins (there are secondary prizes as well).
Hashtag campaigns tied to the most tweets/retweets are not exactly new, but what caught my attention is the “be a hometown hero” angle. While most sweeps involve a payout for the winner, this one integrates an entire community and clearly plays off the desire to look great in front of your peers.
After all, what’s the point of winning anything if all your friends don’t know about it?!
